Gum disease accounts for 70% of tooth loss in America. Only 30% is due to decay or cavities! Because of this it is very important that your dental office monitors your gum health by periodontal probing. Even a dentist or hygienist with their excellent dexterity and knowledge cannot clean their own gums with floss below 3mm deep. If your probings are deeper than 3mm, they are never getting clean, and damage is being done to the supporting jawbone on a daily basis.
Gum Treatments such as Scaling and Root Planing with Oral Irrigation removes the calculus or tartar which is housing millions of bacteria and allows the gum tissue to heal and form a seal against further bacterial attack.
Why can’t I just get a regular cleaning?
A regular cleaning is not able to reach deep enough to remove the deeply hidden deposits. The dentist or hygienist will deliver local anesthetic to the areas of concern and this will allow them to access and adequately clean the deposits off the roots. A superficial cleaning is not only not what you need, but in many cases can cause infection. If the surface calculus and biofilm is removed over a deep deposit, the gum can potentially adhere over the top of the calculus, and trap in the bacteria which can fester and cause an abscess and bone loss.
What happens if I don’t get scaling and root planing?
Since pockets deeper than 3mm are always dirty, bone will continue to be destroyed by the bacteria, the gum pockets will get larger, and this will allow more bacteria to set up residence in your gums. Eventually, the teeth will get loose due to lack of bone support, and be lost.
